Track DNS
Updated: 26 February 2024In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of tracking Domain Name System (DNS) through the interface in cPanel. The DNS is a system that translates domain names understandable by humans into numerical IP addresses required for the purpose of locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols.
Accessing the cPanel
First, you need to access your cPanel. Here is how to do it:
- Open your preferred web browser.
- Type in the address of your cPanel in the address bar. It generally looks like this: http://www.yourwebsite.com/cpanel
- Enter your username and password to log in.
Track DNS interface
Once you have logged into your cPanel, you can now track your DNS. Follow the steps below:
- On the cPanel home page, locate the Advanced section.
- Click on the Track DNS icon. This will open the Track DNS interface.
- In the Track DNS interface, you will see two sections: Domain Lookup and Trace Route.
Domain Lookup
The Domain Lookup tool allows you to retrieve the IP addresses associated with a domain name.
- In the Enter a domain to look up text box, enter the domain you want to trace.
- Click Look Up. The system will display the domain’s IP address.
Trace Route
The Trace Route tool displays the route that your network takes to reach the server.
- Click on the Trace button.
- The tool will display the path that a network packet takes to reach the server from your computer.
Understanding the Results
The results may appear complex at first glance, but they're simply showing the steps your connection takes to reach your website. Each line represents a connection between a computer or a server. The three numbers at the end of each line represent the amount of time it took to make that connection, measured in milliseconds.
Privacy Considerations
Remember that the information you see in the DNS lookup or trace route could potentially be sensitive. Make sure not to share this information publicly to maintain the security of your website.
