What are MIME Types?

MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) Types are a standard way of classifying file types on the Internet. They indicate the nature and format of a document, enabling the browser to handle file downloads and display them properly.

Accessing cPanel

Before we proceed with setting MIME types in cPanel, you first need to access your cPanel account. To do this:

  1. Open your web browser and type your website URL, followed by /cpanel. For example, www.yourwebsite.com/cpanel.
  2. Type in your username and password to log in.

Once you're inside cPanel, you can navigate to the MIME Types setting:

  1. Locate the Advanced section of your cPanel home screen.
  2. Click on the MIME Types icon.

Adding MIME Types

After you've accessed the MIME Types feature, you can add new MIME types:

  1. In the Create a MIME Type section, fill in the MIME Type and Extension(s) fields. For example, you might add 'application/pdf' as the MIME type and 'pdf' as the extension.
  2. Click on the Add button to save your new MIME Type.

Adding Multiple Extensions

If you want to add multiple extensions for a single MIME type, separate them with spaces.

Removing MIME Types

If you need to remove a MIME type, here is how you can do it:

  1. In the User Defined MIME Types section, you'll see a list of MIME types you've added.
  2. Find the MIME type you want to remove, and click the Delete button next to it.

Be Careful When Deleting

Be aware that deleting a MIME type will prevent your server from serving files with that extension. Make sure you know what you're doing before you delete a MIME type.
